Abstract

The article reveals the history of the Free Economic Society’s support of Nikolai Vasilyevich Vereshchagin’s project for the development of artel cheese making in the second half of the 1860s. The main attention is paid to the analysis of the reasons for the success of the Vereshchagin activity and its impact on the development of the cheese industry and agricultural cooperation in Russia. In conclusion, the relevance of Vereshchagin’s project at the present time is considered.
