Abstract

The article traces the history of the existence of the translated of the Second Finding of the Head of John the Baptist in the history of Russian scribe: the oldest Church Slavonic text of the Russian edition of the Legend, which is contained in the February Menaion of the first quarter of the 15th century from the collection of the Moscow Theological Academy (RGB f. 173, 92), compared with later lists in the composition of the Menaion Reader of the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery of the XV century (RGB, f. 113, 594)), the pre-Makaryevskaya February Menaion of the 15th – 16th centuries from the collection of the Novgorod Sophia Cathedral (RNB, Sof. 1377), the pre-Makaryevskaya February Minea of the XVI century from the collection of Egorov (RGB, f. 98, 167), Great Menaion Reader of mt. Macarius XVI century (GIM, Sin. 179, 991), Chudovsky Menaion 1600 (Sob.Chud. 311), Menaion of German Tulupov around 1630 (RGB; f. 304.I, 674), Menaion of Ioann Miliutin 1646-1654 (GIM; Syn. 802). Despite the undoubted similarity of the texts in different lists, there is a significant amount of discrepancy between them.We can say that there are several versions of the considered text. The February volume of the Great Menaion includes two separate editions (The novel of the Two Monks and the novel of Markell), which are the oldest, and the combined (where these two narratives are combined), which is, apparently, a reworking of Metaphrast. It can also be assumed that the compilers of the Great Menaion used in their work the story of two monks, placed in the corresponding volume of the Volokolamsk Menaion, which formed the basis for the rest of the text editions found in the later Menaions of the 16th – 17th centuries. The February Menaion of the first quarter of the 15th century contains a special combined edition which is significantly different from later versions. Perhaps the source of this text, at least of the second part of it, was some other Greek original, about which we do not know.
