Abstract

Objectives This study was intended to empirically verify the structural relationships among work-family balance conflicts, parenting stress, negative parenting attitudes, parental role satisfaction, and problem behaviors of children in order to identify the social and environmental factors of parents that affect the problem behaviors of children. Methods In order to achieve the purpose of this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted with working parents raising children aged 3-7 years, and 521 copies of the collected data were used to test the study hypothesis utilizing the structural equation model and multi-group analysis technique. For the structural equation model, first, the suitability of the measurement model and the reliability and validity of the measurement tool were verified, and then, after verifying the suitability of the structural model, the path coefficient between latent variables was checked to verify the hypothesis. Results As a result of the study, first, work-family balance conflicts were shown to have positive (+) effects on parenting stress, but no significant effect on negative parenting attitudes. Second, parenting stress was shown to have positive (+) effects on negative parenting attitudes and problematic behaviors of children, but no significant effect on parental role satisfaction. Third, negative parenting attitudes were shown to have negative (-) effects on parental role satisfaction and positive (+) effects on problem behaviors of children. Fourth, parental role satisfaction was found to have negative (-) effects on problem behaviors of children. Conclusions This study can be said to be meaningful in that it presented the directivity to promote parents’ work-life balance, the establishment of family policies to promote children’s desirable emotional and behavioral development, and the improvement of welfare services to support families.
