Abstract

In 1997, Aleksandr Panchenko dedicated one of his Radio Liberty broadcast talks in the series “Russian Religiosity” to the “Canon to Angel the Terrible General”, which is ascribed to Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The talk was accompanied by a performance of the Canon in a modern chant version by the Rossika choir conducted by Valentina Kopylova-Panchenko. The text of Panchenko’s talk is preserved in an autograph that has not yet been published. In his talk, A. M. Panchenko discussed issues that he studied in his academic works: foolishness for Christ in medieval Rus’, the religiosity of Ivan the Terrible, Vladimir Malyshev’s life-time efforts to collect manuscripts, the Repository of Ancient Manuscripts (Drevlekhranilishe) of the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Pushkinskij Dom) in St. Petersburg. Panchenko’s talk is published here from his autograph.
