Abstract

Objectives This study aimed to explore the perceived course load and learning implications among college students within the context of online classes.
 Methods To accomplish this goal, we conducted written interviews via an online platform with 23 college students who had experience with online classes. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis methods. Through this process, we extracted and elucidated the factors influencing college students’ course load in online classes and its impact on learning.
 Results The study identified four main categories and fifteen themes related to course load. These categories included learner characteristics, instructor characteristics, class activities and assessments, and the inherent characteristics of the online environment. The findings revealed that these factors had both positive and negative effects. Positive effects included increased investment of time in learning and class participation, while negative effects included decreased concentration during class and increased fatigue.
 Conclusions The findings of this study provide valuable insights for instructors in designing appropriate instructional elements and support strategies for online classes.
