Abstract

The paper publishes the materials of the Dnieper-Don Babyne Culture’s mound (DDBC), excavated in 1982 near the village Novogupalivka, on the left bank of the Dnieper rapids, by the Zaporizhia expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences under the guidance of S.N. Lyashko. In mound 10 two Babyne burials were investigated, of which burial 1 was primary and burial 2 was secondary with filling. Both burials belong to the male ritual group of the early period, which is confirmed by the funeral equipment, which included rather rare categories of artifacts: burial 1 – wooden casket with copperbronze jewelry – two tubules and temporal ring; burial 2 – bone hook-strip buckle. The stratigraphic sequence of burials, ritual characteristics and diagnostic equipment provide grounds for some conclusions about the chronology. Both burials belong to the first period of DDBC. Burial 1 is characterized by signs of the early stage (ІА) of the early period. But burial 2, judging by the secondary stratigraphic status and relatively late features (strongly crouched posture of the deceased with adoration position of the hand (W), can be dated to the late stage (IB) of the early period. This circumstance may affect the determination of the time of existence of hook-strip buckles, as chronological markers. If most known burials with hook-strip buckles belong to the early stage (IA) of the early period, then the burial Novogupalivka III 10/2 may to extend the chronology of these products, capturing the late stage (IB) of the early period, most likely its beginning. But this conclusion should be considered preliminary, requiring additional verification.
