Abstract

The article describes the system of work of the First Ukrainian Gymnasium named after. T. G. Shevchenko in Ukraine, founded in March 1917 under the leadership of V. Durdukivski on the proposal of the School Commission. Attention is focused on the second stage of its activity – 1920–1933 – the period of active work in the realization of the tasks of social education. It has been proved that by fulfilling the policy guidelines of state administrative educational authorities, the school implemented its own model of social education based on the principles of creativity, activity, independence of teachers and students. Much attention was paid to the activity approach. The school was national in nature and content. The leading forms of work on social education recognized children's school self-government, the system of extra-curricular work. The gymnasium thoroughly solved the issues of social protection of children. Unlike the «normative base» on the place in the role of the family in the upbringing of children (not recognition), the school involved parents and the public through various forms of work. The development of children's creativity school was based on the type of school-club and was based on a fairly branched system of circle work. The publication shows that the director of the school was engaged in extensive public work, left a thorough pedagogical heritage. Many forms of work on the social upbringing of children introduced in the gymnasium were the basis of the legal framework for the organization of the educational process in the 20's and 30's of the XX century in schools of Ukraine. V. Durdukivski did not go through a tragic fate, as did his colleagues and many pro-Ukrainian-minded representatives of the domestic intelligentsia during the period of political repressions from 1929 to 1941. His creative work, the activity of the educational institution under his supervision, requires further research in the context of historical retrospective, especially during the introduction of the Concept of a New Ukrainian School in Ukraine.
