Abstract

The article presents a new view on the history of creation and edition of L. N. Tolstoy’s short story “Il’yas”. The dating of the writer’s work on the story is specified: March 14-26, May 17, 1885, the first half of March 1886. The stages of the embodiment of the plan are studied. An analysis of the formation of the content and form of elements shows that draft manuscripts do not contain any signs that would confirm the existence of an early version. For the first time different interpretations of the printed publications of “Il’yas” in 1886 are systematized, the typology of semantic mistakes and errors admitted by the author and introduced into the story by the preparers is revealed.
