Abstract

<p>The article addresses ekphrasis as a kind of polycode text that combines elements of different sign systems. The purpose of the work is to study the relationship between verbal and visual (iconic) elements in a detailed portrait ekphrasis, represented by the poem of the modern Irish poetess M. McGuckian «The Seed-Picture». The study discovered the main functions and forms of the interaction between verbal and non-verbal components in the polycode structure of the poetic text. Linguistic and stylistic means of creating a visual image underlying the analyzed ekphrasis were identified. It was concluded that the combination of all these factors affects the generation of new meanings and produces the process of artistic communication.</p>
