Abstract
The purpose of this study was to search for the establishment necessity of Jeju Educational Science (JES) based on locality of Jeju. To do so, the study employed in-depth interviews with six persons who have served and had experiences as a teacher, an administrator of local educational offices, or a member of local council. Open coding identified 29 key concepts, 12 subcategories, and five core categories. The major conclusions are as follows: First, Jeju education has the differences as well as uniqueness from the education of the other areas. Second, the establishment necessity of JES is related to find uniqueness of Jeju education and to create it, so that the period division of Jeju education should be formed in order to consider synthetically both the differences of the period and time continuity in education. Third, it should be considered that the academical necessity of JES as well as the social needs, that can support the practical needs of schools and bring to local development by JES. Finally, the implications for the establishment necessity of JES were provided based on the results mentioned above.
