Abstract

This article discusses the results of our etymological research based on the fundamental principle of the Historical Dictionary of Modern Greek (ILNE), according to which correct etymology can only be achieved through total examination and comparison of both available sources and dialectal data (see principles in the Ν ew Manual of Regulations of ILNE). We present fresh etymological data and new etymological proposals for words of Standard Modern Greek vocabulary, such as ξυρίζeι-ξουρίζeι (ο αέρας) ‘for cold air, it blows’, κοκό ‘egg, dessert’, πατσαβούρα ‘rag’, ρέντα ‘a run of success, luck ’, ξeνοκοιτάζω ‘I seek for extramarital relations’.
