Abstract

The influence of refraction when observing a surface or ground target in an airborne radar is considered. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the angle of photogrammetric atmospheric refraction. However, its behavior is not covered in the radar literature. In ground-based radars, the angle of true atmospheric refraction must be taken into account. At a high radar flight altitude, it is several times larger than the photogrammetric refraction angle. Calculation and comparison of refraction angles was performed. A simplified refraction accounting model is considered, in which the radius of the Earth is replaced by an equivalent radius. The permissible conditions for the use of this model in an airborne radar are estimated. Tables of values of the angle of photogrammetric refraction for performing target elevation bearing correction in the onboard radar are presented.
