Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effect of self-compassion between adult attachment insecurity and personal growth following romantic breakups. To this end, level of adult attachment insecurity, personal growth following romantic breakups, and self-compassion in 237 unmarried adult men and women were assessed. Baron and Kenny’s moderating test procedure was used and multiple regression analysis through the stepwise selection method was conducted. The results were as follows: First, in correlation analysis, adult attachment insecurity was negative significantly correlated with personal growth following romantic breakups. In contrast, self-compassion was positive significantly correlated with growth following romantic breakups. Second, This study found the moderating effect of self-compassion on the relationship between adult attachment insecurity and personal growth following romantic breakups. These results suggest that it is effective in counseling to increase the level of self-compassion when an adult with a high level of adult attachment insecurity experiences a traumatic event such as a romantic breakup. This research ends with limitations and suggestions for future research.
