Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study is to understand the married professional women’s motive for majoring in counseling, and their experiences in the process. Methods For this, total three married women who were currently working for professional job and also majoring in counseling at the same time, participated in this study. Through the semi-structured questionnaire suitable for the purpose of this study, the participants were able to fully talk about their stories. This study aimed to understand their experiences by using the narrative inquiry method by Clandinin & Connelly based on raw data. Also, this study aimed to increase the quality of research by using the assessment criteria of applicability, consistency, realistic value, and neutrality, in order to raise the reliability and validity. Results Participants' motives of selecting profession are because their clear desire and goals. They could have profession through the departments that they wanted because of having their goals and it has found that they have high satisfaction. And the motives of majoring in counseling were divided into two things of ‘self realization’ and ‘problem solving’ for themselves and others. The participants reported that they felt ‘being more themselves’ and experienced ‘others' changes’ due to this. And they applied the contents that they learned from counseling to their jobs in their own way and showed that they found the central points for balancing in various roles. Conclusions Professional women who majored in counseling got to understand and accept themselves and showed that their individual growth and social changes began by combining counseling with their jobs. The study showed the connecting power of combining profession with counseling, reconfirmed the importance of counseling, and prepared the basis which can expand the counseling field.
