Abstract

The article considers songs as a significant resource for learning the English
 language. Psychological, pedagogical and language reasons for using
 the songs as a tool for teaching the language are considered. Physiology
 and psychology of perception, context, and narrative, emotive and appellative
 functions of this music genre as well as social and cultural components
 are seen as important components of the song genre. The author realizes
 that listening to songs should be reasonably limited and looks upon the criteria
 of songs selection. The author gives an example of a lesson devoted
 to the financial crisis and its consequences. The lesson is based on an
 authentic narrative song on social and economic issues. The artistic and
 language features of this text material are studied. Communicative tasks
 are designed.
