Abstract

This review, pursuing the objective of systematizing the various ideas about mental disorders of epileptic nature, submits the analysis of the publications by the staff of V. Serbsky National Medical Research Centre for Psychiatry and Narcology from early 20 th century to the present, considering various psychopathological disorders in epileptic disease. We present the views of the founders of forensic psychiatry, focusing on the qualification of various variants of disordered consciousness, delusional disorders, and reactive states. We consider the contemporary ideas about the meaning of affective, cognitive, psychotic disorders, and personality changes in epilepsy. Various approaches to forensic psychiatric assessment of these disorders are analyzed with the definition of the legal criterion for insanity and limited responsibility, procedural capacity, and potential dangerousness.
