Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the characterization of synaptic protein expression by exercise intervention in androgen-deficient rats. The experimental animals were divided into three groups (n=10 in each group): the normal control group (CON), orchiectomized(OCX+CON) and treadmill exercise group with orchiectomized(OCX+TE). The rats in the exercise group were forced to run on a treadmill for 30~45 min 5 times per week for 12 weeks. Compared to the CON group, the OCX+CON group showed significantly decreased serum testosterone levels and also, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and synapsin 1 (SYN1) mRNA expression in the hippocampus. Whereas, OCX+TE group was significantly increased testosterone and BDNF mRNA compared to the OCX+CON group. SYN1 mRNA was slightly increased than OCX+CON group, but was not significant different. These results suggest that exercise is one of the effective intervention strategies to prevent testosterone deficiency-mediated cognitive impairment the aging process of males.
