Abstract
This study introduces hybrid spectrum sensing using multiple spectrum sensors for backup channel search. Hybrid spectrum sensing combines parallel and serial spectrum sensing. In hybrid spectrum sensing, parallel spectrum sensing of the first step is performed for all the frequency channels of one channel group. These multiple frequency channels are simultaneously sensed by parallel spectrum sensors. All channel groups are then sensed by serial spectrum sensing of the second step. A system model for performance evaluation is also suggested based on the mean channel search time to search the backup channel. The numerical results suggest the optimal channel sensing time using the mean channel search time of hybrid spectrum sensing in the case of a cognitive radio device hardware structure with multiple spectrum sensors.
