Abstract

This study aims to investigate the emergence of a gender-equitable co-parenting culture, specifically focusing on men’s utilization of the parental leave system. We conducted interviews with six male teachers who had utilized parental leave and identified two central themes. The first primary theme, “A New Perception of Care,” encompasses three sub-themes: “challenges associated with caregiving,” “cultivating empathy towards caregivers,” and “heightened interests in care recipients.” The second primary theme, “Gender-Equitable Co- Parenting Culture,” includes three subthemes: “fostering collaborative for co-parenting partnerships,” “promoting equitable distribution of household responsibilities,” and “father parenting,” which diverge from conventional maternal parenting practices. This study provides valuable insights by concentrating on a specific occupational group, i.e., teachers, and explores how the parental leave system actively contributes to the evolution of a shared, gender-equitable co-parenting culture within our society.
