Abstract

The article addresses the problem of the origins of Plotinus’s apophatic theology. It substantiates the proposition that teachings on matter of Plato, Aristotle and Plotinus himself can be considered as such grounds. In Plato’s ontology, matter is endowed with negative characteristics and is considered practically non-existence. In Aristotle’s philosophy, apophatic context of matter is formulated by means of the notion of non-existence. Understanding of matter in Plotinus’s philosophy is based on Plato’s teaching. However, apophatic description of the One is similar in many ways to understanding of non-existence in Aristotle’s philosophy.
