Abstract

The paper is devoted to the study of the poetics of the novels “The Green Road” (2015), “The Gathering” (2007) by the modern Irish English-speaking writer Anne Enright. The aim of the research is to determine the features of the interpretation of the image of a liminal woman and the image of a ghost as specific artistic means of actualising the theme of memory in Irish prose. This theme is inextricably linked with the issue of ethnic and national identity and is interpreted through the lens of socio-cultural values of the past in the modern global literary space. The paper introduces new material into scientific use, considers A. Enright’s works that have not been translated into Russian. The research is original in that it represents the first attempt to give a holistic analysis of a fundamentally new interpretation of images from the ancient Irish epic in Russian literary studies. As a result of the research, it has been found that A. Enright’s novels reflected the ethnic and national identity of Irish society, which today can complement the controversial concept of “Irishness” as a whole.
