Abstract
NiO nanoparticles were synthesized using the vacuum arc sputtering method. The influence of synthesis parameters on the structural and magnetic properties of the samples was studied. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the polycrystalline nature of the resulting nanoparticles under all deposition conditions, but the preferred crystallite orientation depends on the deposition conditions. Magnetic behavior correlates with the crystallite size of NiO nanoparticles. Condensates with particle sizes in the range of 4–6 nm exhibit superparamagnetic behavior, which changes to antiferromagnetic behavior as the particle size increases.
