Abstract

This article attempts to use pragmatics for the analysis of opinion material on Youm7 and China Arabic websites. A sample survey from the period between January 1 and December 31, 2020 on global health diplomacy against COVID-19 has been conducted. The findings indicate that both websites adopt a solution-based approach for prevention and international cooperation to overcome the crisis and boost human security as a basis for successful health diplomacy, especially the official aspects of it. It is the same approach adopted to provide health assistance to affected countries, promote human rights, and strengthen health security as primary goals. Content producers have relied on cross-referencing real and historical events relating to the epidemic. To drive home their notions, pragmatic devices such as authentic ideas, instructive and hinting strategies, among others, have been employed. The perceived goals of these producers has been to affect behavioral changes among recipients. With increasing international stigmatization of China as a source of the epidemic, the discourse was found to be interpretative and defensive. The findings unveil substantial similarity between both websites in terms of content across phonemic, morphological, and semantic levels. Writers have used informative and ordering verbs heavily. The language used achieves successful verbal messaging using linguistic and rhetorical tools. Present temporal signals are widely used as well to produce realistic discourse relating to coping with the pandemic.
