Abstract

Non-return educational migration tends to become a topical problem of the Republic for it entails considerable risks, such as shortage of qualified manpower, decreased intellectual potential, losses of childbearing age groups, endangered ethnic culture and language, etc. Goals. The article aims to analyze results of in-depth interviews for characteristics of educational — and further labor — migration from rural Kalmykia to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Materials and methods. The qualitative study of non-return educational migration examines a total of 20 in-depth phone interviews. Results. In most cases, educational migrations to megalopolises turn into labor ones to be further aggravated with a home purchase and consummation of marriage. The youth migration threatens the preservation and transmission of ethnic culture, traditions and language both in the Republic and in places of actual residence of such migrants.
