Abstract

Abstract: This paper shed light on two poems; the first one is by the Jahilī poet Abū ʾUdhaynah al-Lakhmī and the second one is attributed, in all probability, to the Abbasid poet Shibl ibn ʿAbd Allah, a client (mawla) of Banū Hāshim. It aims to perform a complete comparison between the two poems, through displaying the technical and rhetorical aspects employed by the two poets for the sake of achieving their personal interests. The choice of these two poems was to make a comparison between them, based on the notable similarity in the political as well as social contexts during which the two poems were composed and recited. Both poems succeeded to persuade the Lakhmī king and Abbasid Khalifah to change their decision on giving a forgiveness to the captives to harshly murdering and eradicating them.
