Abstract

This study examines whether sports can raise the academic motivation and will of Asian foreign students in local universities in Korea in their school life. To that end, using purposeful sampling, 12 Asian foreign students and their three helpers in three local universities (Chungnam, Jeolla and Gangwon regions) were selected as subjects. Data were gathered for eight months from April 2019 to November 2019 by making participatory observation of subjects and through story-style interview of them. Of Spradley"s folklore research methods, area analysis and classification analysis were used to derive the following conclusion. First, sports help convert foreign students into the active entities of learning. Second, sports lead students to be open to their identity through cultural exposure. Third, sports lead students to shed an outsider position and be incorporated into their university life. Fourth, sports lead to the expansion of educational environment through activities of exchange.
