Abstract
Based on the material of the story “Blue Cities” and the story “Jan”, this study compares the creative laboratory of two powerful artistic personalities in the era of major fractures and world disasters — A.N. Tolstoy and A.P. Platonov. Through the comparative analysis of the story “Blue cities” of A.N. Tolstoy and the story” Jan “A.P. Platonov, the similarity and difference in the attitude of the characters, as well as their words and deeds during the described events, are revealed. Both writers employ protagonists who are determined to make the whole of humanity happy. In Tolstoy’s story, there is a downfall of this dream. With his own life, the protagonist of Platonov’s novel asserts conditions for building a new world in which man will be happy. The conceptual idea of the Platonov’s story “Jan”: “... help will come only from another person”. The approach to the protagonist is explained by the ideological positions of the writers.
