Abstract

The study aims to identify specificity of realising the emotive potential of lexical units with different degrees of conflictogenity and to determine their functions in the text, based on the material of television talk shows. The work is novel in that it is the first to shed light on the role of special lexical markers of emotivity in production of conflictogenic texts of talk shows. As a result of the analysis, it is revealed that emotive means are the “triggering mechanism” that initiates speech conflict, while lexical units (primarily those with invective semantics) become the main agents of actualisation of a text conflictogenity. It is also found that implicit methods of expressing aggression, for example, euphemisation and sarcasm, are in some cases triggers for speech conflict.
