Abstract

The article investigates the influence of Andrei Belyi’s theory and practice of glossolalia on Russian poetry. It discusses the context in which Belyi’s theory of “the magic of the word” originated and how it expressed itself in his poetic practice of “sound poetry” (zvukoslovie). The futurist theory of “transnational language” builds on the link between magical glossolalic speech and poetic language. Neo-avant-garde Russian poetry sees the rebirth of verbal mysticism. The idea of glossolalic incantation enters the poetry of G. Aigi and E. Mnatsakanowa. Belyi’s “dark glossolalia” adopts the force of sorcery in these poetic works.
