Abstract

This study aims to analyze the awareness of beauty teachers in vocational high schools using cosmetic products containing toxic chemicals in classes and experimental laboratories and accordingly, propose the necessity of education on such substances.
An online survey was conducted among 60 teachers of beauty subjects in vocational high schools. Data acquired from the online survey was statistically analyzed using SPSS Statistics 25.0 program.
According to the analysis results, 41.7% of beauty teachers provided classes for 17-18 hours a week and practice classes for over 13 hours a week. The respondents recognized the toxicity of the physical hazardous environment (noise, temperature, vibration) and the chemical hazardous environment (dust, organic solvent, odor, mist) factors in experimental laboratories. 98.3% of teachers agreed with the necessity of education on the toxic substances used in experimental laboratories. The most urgent education on toxic substances, which teachers selected, was about the ‘impacts of exposure to chemicals (side effects)’.
In conclusion, special training on the hazardous environment and toxic substances in experimental laboratories per subject is required by many beauty teachers through practices for safe and health beauty classes. Moreover, further study needs to focus on education methods.
