Abstract

The article deals with the revelance of historical and pedagogical consideration of foreign language education problems for the modern science. The historical, socio-political, economic and cultural foundations of this relevance are outlined: an integration of the modern world in all its areas, which involves active communication among representatives of different ethnic groups and states. The importance of the national experience studying for modernization and intensification of the process of teaching foreign languages in the modern Ukrainian school is emphasized. It is explained what motivates the interest in the experience of Galicia gymnasiums during a certain period in the field of their activities, such as teaching foreign languages.The specifics of the historical-pedagogical studio are specified; approaches (historiographical, systemic, chronological, civilization, formative, synergetic) and principles (historicism, objectivity, activity, combination of logical and historical) are defined, which ensure the authenticity and correctness of its results; the leading role of the principle of historicism, which involves characterization of the historical background, the establishment of chronological boundaries, analysis of the source base has been shown. It is shown the importance of taking into account the data of diverse sources for the comprehensive consideration of the problem: archival materials, published normative legal documents, texts of monographs, dissertations, articles contained in contemporary and current periodicals and collections of scientific works, memoirs, etc. The chronological boundaries of the study are defined, it is explained by what circumstances it is caused its lower (1874, the year of introduction in the all classes of the only state Ukrainian gymnasium at that time - the Lviv academic - Ukrainian language as an outline and giving the status of one of the subjects to the German language) and the upper March 1923, when the decision of the Council of Ambassadors of the Entente states was transferred to Eastern Galicia under the jurisdiction of Poland). The historical, political and economic circumstances, which stimulated the development of school life in Galicia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the teaching of foreign languages in particular, were described.The emphasis is on changes in target guides for studying foreign languages in Galicia gymnasiums of the investigated period and on the expected results of these changes.
