Abstract

The study aims to expand upon the problem of interaction between the man and the nature in the shorts stories “Hassan and His Jeddy”, “Mary”, “My Mars”, “The Linden and the Palm” by I. S. Shmelyov. The research is novel in that it examines the works’ main depicting principle - juxtaposition of a child’s and an adult’s worldviews, uncovering differences in how a child hero perceives the nature as opposed to an adult character. The attained results have shown that the author interpreted childhood as time of harmonious coexistence with the natural word. An adult’s worldview is characterised by alienation from the nature’s life. The study may be of interest to researchers of I. S. Shmelyov’s writing.
