Abstract

The paper aims to identify ways to teach the skills of semantisation of non-verbal means for compacting information used in the English-language technical text and the skills of communication of their meaning in the target language to students pursuing a Master’s degree. The authors analysed the factors complicating information extraction during reading due to the use of non-verbal graphic elements, such as synonymy, polysemy of graphic elements, their frequent occasional use, occurrence in a great number of abbreviations, etc. The study is novel in that it is the first to propose exercises aimed at developing the skills of semantisation of graphic elements, as well as the skills of communication of their meaning in the target language for students pursuing a Master’s degree. As a result of the analysis, exercises aimed at forming the skills of semantisation of graphic elements, as well as the skills of communication of their meaning in the target language among students pursuing a Master’s degree have been proposed.
