Abstract

The paper aims to identify the socio-economic status of coachmen in a big city of Russia in the 1720s by the example of Nizhny Novgorod province. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that relying on the population census data of 1721-1722, the author examines the financial situation of Nizhny Novgorod coachmen, for the first time identifies the circle of well-to-do coachmen, analyses distribution of the coachmen population among parishes, considers family structure, compares annual birth and death rates. The conducted research allows concluding that during a forty-year period, consolidation of this social group occurred: its size increased 1.7 times, 71% of coachmen had their own homesteads, no less than 5.4% had workmen. The coachmen tended to settle in Yamskaya Sloboda and the nearby territories.
