Abstract

The research objective is as follows: relying on the data on the current state of Mordovian folk song tradition, the author justifies the necessity to include Mordovian bourdon-heterophonic polyphony in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, grounds the necessity to develop a set of measures to preserve the vanishing type of polyphonic singing. Scientific originality of the paper lies in the fact that the researcher analyzes the existing ethno-musicological studies in the aspect of preserving Mordovian folk song tradition. The findings indicate that the areal of Mordovian three-voiced bourdon polyphony has decreased, and the status of remaining polyphonic ensembles has declined to secondary, which negatively influences the vitality of Mordovian polyphonic tradition.
