Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the urban aspects embedded in Lee Chung-jun’s literary works where characters struggle to conform to the cultural norms and social order derived from capitalist reality of living in urban space. Therefore, Lee’s motivation of writing has been known as “vengeance on the world,” as the writer’s perception of reality was shaped by his urban experiences of poverty and loneliness. However, his literary world contains a positive view of urban reality. It often conveys his innate interest and exotic gaze on the city, and his desire is presented in a form of romantic view.
