Abstract

The article analyses the development of the health care system and health services in the districts of Nizhny Novgorod province in the 1860-1880s. Relying on the materials of regional archives and uncommon published sources the authors examine the key problems of the formation and development of health services in the districts and provincial towns. The study indicates that in the mentioned period in Nizhny Novgorod province there occurred qualitative changes in health care issues associated, first of all, with the formation of the district and stationary health care system. Health services became available for all the population strata, not only in the central part of the province but in its remote territories, which was an important social achievement in this period.
