Abstract

The paper considers perception of the Czechoslovak Corps’s role in the battle for Kazan in 1918 in the Czechoslovak legionary historiography. Scientific originality of the article lies in the fact that this problem has not been previously investigated in the domestic historiography. Analysing the legionary historiography, the author focuses on the following issues: motives for launching the offensive operation and attitude of the Czechoslovak Corps’s command, contribution of the Czechoslovak legionnaires to the seizure and defence operations, circumstances that forced them to abandon Kazan and consequences of this decision for the “Czechoslovak movement” in Russia. The conclusion is made that the Czechoslovak legionary historiographers fully recognize contribution of the Czechoslovak Corps to the seizure and defence operations and evaluate adequately the impact of this battle on subsequent events.
