Abstract
The paper aims to systematise and analyse regimental histories of military formations of the Kuban Cossack Host at the final stage of the Caucasian War, to identify the reasons for their compilation and writing, to determine their significance in the scientific search of modern scholars. The research is novel in that it is the first in Russian historiography to summarise and analyse works written by pre-revolutionary and modern authors on the military historical topics regarding the second largest irregular military formation of the Russian Empire, the Kuban Cossack Host. The paper raises unresolved questions related to the lack of necessary sources on individual Cossack formations that took an active part in the armed confrontation with mountain peoples. As a result, it has been concluded that the identified historiographical materials about the events of the Caucasian War, expanding and supplementing knowledge about the history of the Kuban Cossacks and the Imperial Russian Army in 1861-1864, are the most important sources for the study of Russia’s military history and deserve close attention from scholars.
