Abstract
Based on existing studies, this article aims at (re)interpreting the colonial economy of French Indochina. Under the French colonial rule, this territory was integrated into the French imperial economy, providing France with important outlets for its industrial products, but hardly with the resources it needed. On the other hand, Indochina became a privileged field for the overseas expansion of French capital. However, the transformation of the colony into a profit-making space required some preparations, a task assumed by the colonial state. The enterprises formed with metropolitan capital dominated the Indochinese economy, but not all of them were successful. Future researches should reveal cracks in the colonial capitalism as well as investigate the complicated interactions between colonizers and the colonized.
