Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the existing lexical and grammatical possibilities for expressing the category of number and the main direction of their development in the modern Abaza language. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the ascertainment of the emerging trend of the plural formants unification in the language. In the course of the analysis of a large corpus of illustrative linguistic material extracted from lexicographic sources, samples of the Abaza oral folk art, texts of fiction and the authors’ field material, the features of the formation of the modern system of expressing the plural number of nouns and the possible unification of the existing morphological markers of plurality are determined; and, as a result, the suffix -ква can become a universal (or main) formant of this category.
