Abstract

Poor people are struggling to survive on a daily basis in the face of adverse economic conditions. The present study has been done with regard to few researches in the field of survival strategies of low-income people in Iran and with the aim of paying attention to the lived experience of these people. In this research, behavioral / decision theory, human capital theory, assets and financial / income risk theory, and risk avoidance theory have been used to increase theoretical sensitivity. The method of the present study is qualitative, the technique of data collection is interview and the technique of data analysis is thematic analysis (according to Brown and Clark framework). Findings from 22 interviews among the poor people in Mashhad show the survival strategies used, including supportive strategies (informal and formal), job (employment, self-employment), education and skills acquisition (education, skills training), criminal activities (theft, prostitution) and cost reduction (reduction of food consumption, purchase of clothing and health).
