Abstract

The aim of the paper is to determine how complete the reproduction of the axiological and value content of F. M. Dostoevsky’s novel “Crime and Punishment” in different versions of its title translated into German is. Scientific originality lies in the fact that the study describes the history of rendering the novel title by German translators in 1882-1994. As a result, it has been found that the variant “Schuld und Sühne” (“Guilt and Atonement”) is most often used as a title. In most cases, this variant is used with the name of the novel protagonist. The analysis has shown that the title “Verbrechen und Strafe” (“Crime and Pun-ishment”), proposed in the translations of A. S. Eliasberg and S. Geier, helps to reproduce the most im-portant semantic accents and seems to be the most accurate one.
