Abstract

The article deals with the information about the Eastern Caucasus, left by the Russian orientalist Ilya Nikolayevich Berezin in his work “Travel to Dagestan and the Transcaucasia”, prepared as a result of his journey to the East; this work has become an important historical source. The author carries out the comparative analysis of the content of two chapters - “From Derbent to Kuba” and “From Kuba to Baku” - and identifies “reliable” and “probabilistic” information. Despite the fact that the work is of “journalistic” nature, it contains important epigraphic materials, information on the genealogy of Kuba khans, the construction of Derbent fortress, and so on.
