Abstract

In the existing membrane diffuser, even if there was a problem with one membrane, the entire bioreactor had to be drained to check for any abnormalities in the membrane and to replace it. A new tube type membrane diffuser that can be installed along rails with a replaceable structure without draining the bio-reactor is proposed. Through computational fluid analysis, the air transfer performance and flow characteristics of the disc-type membrane, which is conventional diffuser, and tube-type membrane were analyzed. The results obtained include the volume fraction and flow characteristics such as the velocity and streamline according to the membrane shape in the bio-reactor. The detailed flow characteristics inside the bio-reactor for different membrane shapes can offer basic guidelines to improve the membrane diffuser.
