Abstract

The article analyses lexical means to express the comical in S. D. Dovlatov’s story “Pushkin Hills”. It is shown that comical effect is achieved by simultaneous use of bookish or borrowed vocabulary and colloquial or jargon words and words untypical of a character or inappropriate for a situation. The article also describes the functions of the comical in S. D. Dovlatov’s story “Pushkin Hills”. One of the basic functions involves characterizing a personage. It manifests itself through the personages’ inappropriate word choice, which reveals the amusing side of the characters’ attempts to show themselves in the best light or indicates their insufficient education. Another important function is to express the author’s attitude to the characters and situations.
