Abstract
The article covers some relevant issues of conducting research on history of the penal system of the Russian Federation. An analysis of program documents of recent years, content of articles in scientific collections published based on results of annual conferences, provisions of applicable laws in the science regulation sphere, is used as a basis to word approaches towards planning research on history of the penal system of the Russian Federation and propose certain promising research areas.
