Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how North Korea’s military buildup has affected DPRK’s security-economy mechanism in an international system transformation. North Korea had tried to develop its economy while prioritizing military buildup in Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il eras. Kim Il-Sung’s North Korea had succeeded in developing the economy as well as strengthening military capability under the bipolar system led by the US and the USSR. Kim Jong-Il’s North Korea, however, had to suffer economic damages from international sanctions although it became a nuclear power under the unipolar system of the US. Based on DPRK’s history, China has to keep challenging US hegemony in the international arena for Kim Jong-Un’s North Korea to achieve its security and economic goals at the same time. If China gives up fighting against the US and follows its leadership, it is impossible for Pyongyang to become a strong nation both in the security and economic areas.
