Abstract

This paper is a review of ornamental objects (brooches, bracelets, earrings, pendants, belt fittings) of the Danubian provenance of the late 6th — early 9th century, revealed at sites of the forest zone of Russia and Belorussia. It is commonly known that in traditional societies, female costume is fairly conservative. Items of the men’s decoration, e.g. belt mounts, reflect, as a rule. the ‘military’ fashion and are of interest for a better understanding of the cultural and political orientation, and hence of the military-political history of the early people. The spread of Danubian objects, most probably, reflects the propagation of a new wave of Slavic settlers from Central Europe to the forest zone.
