Abstract

The aim of the given article is to scrutinize the use of homonyms as a means of creating puns in Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”. Of special interest is the scrutiny of the paramount role of homonyms in creating humorous effects in the given literary work. It is worth mentioning that ongoing change of the language wordstock leads to the creation of new groups of homonyms. In the current paper, the main focus is on the fact that polysemy serves as a rich source of creating puns. As a result of the scrutiny of homonyms, it comes to light that homonyms have been used in the given literary work not only for creating humorous effects and expressing irony, but also for creating confusion and misunderstanding among characters.
